What is Project Phoenix?

Project Phoenix is the rebirth of the former Lutheran Youth of North Seattle (LYONS). From its formation in 1998 through 2019 LYONS served as a cooperative ministry for middle and high school students from a number of ELCA Lutheran churches in the north Seattle area. In addition to monthly activities, a highlight of LYONS was the annual “Dinner Theater” produced by the youth, LYONS staff, and an energetic team of volunteers. In 2019, LYONS became Project Phoenix after a shift in church demographics.

A board composed of members from the member churches provides oversight and programming for Project Phoenix activities, with the mission to serve and welcome ALL youth in a Christ-centered community of worship, witness, service, education, growth and fun.

According to myth, the phoenix would sense the end of its life approaching and it would build a funeral pyre and then consume itself in the flames. Three days later, the phoenix would rise from the ashes, as if reborn.

It is easy to see the concept of resurrection in the myth of the phoenix. Through the resurrecting fire of the Holy Spirit, God takes the ashes of our lives and creates beauty. God transforms us; God recreates us; God improves us.

to provide for those who mourn in Zion—

to give them a garland instead of ashes,

the oil of gladness instead of mourning,

the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit.

They will be called oaks of righteousness,

the planting of the LORD, to display his glory.

Isaiah 61:3
